This reproduction, from a viewbook of the sights and buildings at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, illustrates the interior of the Galerie des Machines, designed by Ferdinand Dutert. This enormous iron and glass structure--measuring 1,452 feet long, 380 feet wide, and 148 feet high--was intended to complement the Eiffel Tower.
