Head, Heart, Hands, and Health

"First Prize White Wyandotte pen 4-H Clubs State Show, Baltimore, 1925. Owned by William Carroll, Bel Air, Maryland. Special for best grown and conditioned pen in exhibit. "

4-H is part of the Youth Development program of the Maryland Cooperative Extension System, which the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources sponsors.

For over 100 years, volunteer leaders have worked with the counties' Extension services to provide youth with practical education and hands-on experience. State Farmers Institutes began sponsoring 4-H clubs in the early 1900s. Since 1911, the 4 "H's" officially represent head, heart, hands, and health. The organization's emblem is the four-leaf clover.

4-H members often participate in county and state fair contests. The University of Maryland has hosted events on campus for 4-H members, such as poultry competitions and the annual 4-H Club Week in the summer.
