Calvert's Creation
:
History and Development of the University of
Maryland at College Park

The Maryland Agricultural College (MAC) was founded in
1856 by a group of nineteen Maryland planters and politicians, led by
Charles Benedict Calvert. These men envisioned an institution that would
provide scientific agricultural training and cultural refinement for the
sons of ordinary farmers from around the state. After considerable legislative
and financial struggles, the college opened its doors to students in the
fall of 1859.
MAC became a guiding force in agriculture in the state of Maryland. The
Agricultural Experiment Station, headquartered in the Rossborough Inn,
was founded in 1888 to use the resources of science to improve the practice
and profitability of agriculture.
