Core Tasks for Collection Managers

    Fund Management and Resource Selection
  • Encumber funds by established deadlines.
  • Review weekly shipments.
  • Review gift materials for possible acquisition.
  • Build and maintain awareness of new information resources available for purchase.
  • Evaluate requests for materials.
  • Collaborate with Dept/School Budget officer, if appropriate
  • Be aware of possibilities for Collection Endowments.
  • Address user needs for new journals and online access to existing subscriptions.
  • Assess and make purchase recommendations regarding new databases and other electronic products.
  • Work with the Reference fund manager to ensure ongoing purchase of needed reference materials.
  • Make replacement purchase decisions for lost or long overdue books.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to meet cross-disciplinary needs.
  • Monitor approval and purchase plan profiles to ensure appropriateness of materials supplied, make adjustments as necessary.
    Projects or collection-wide initiatives
  • Participate in projects and processes as determined by CMT and ERC (e.g. Big ticket).
    Citizenship
  • Abide by CMT (core tasks/best practices).
  • Participate in UM Libraries meetings dealing with collection development issues.
    Collection evaluation
  • Review collections as needed to ensure that collection management corresponds to campus needs and priorities.
  • Prepare collection evaluations as needed for departmental and program review.
    Liaison
  • Work closely with assigned department(s) to determine needs for collection building.
  • Inform faculty, students and staff about new resources and other collection issues.
  • Monitor changes and developments in departments to assess possible effects on the collections.
    Technical Services
  • Collaborate with preservation staff to ensure appropriate maintenance of library collections.
  • Collaborate with cataloging and acquisitions staff to ensure appropriate processing of library collections to ensure appropriate maintenance of library collections.
  • Understand and adhere to preservation expectations for all Library staff.
    Professional development
  • Participate in opportunities to learn about collection development work and issues (e.g. training sessions, conferences, etc.).
