JSTOR: “Do not bind” ProposalJournal volumes enter JSTOR according to the Moving Wall established by the journal publisher. The walls range from 0-10 years, with 5 and 3 years being the most common. The UM Libraries subscribe to numerous journals that will eventually be added to the JSTOR archive. The Libraries have begun sending the bound print volumes of JSTOR journals off-site. This practice will continue (in accordance with OSS Guidelines and UM Libraries’ statements regarding housing print volumes of e-journals) since on-campus library space is at a premium. Since print copies of JSTOR journals increasingly will be sent off campus as soon as the Moving Wall encompasses them, and since there are competing needs for preservation and bindery funds, print copies of journals in JSTOR will no longer be sent out for commercial binding at year's end. Print copies of recent issues not yet in JSTOR would remain in the current periodicals room of the receiving library. When the Moving Wall is reached, the loose issues would be appropriately bundled and sent to the location that houses the title run. As our experience with this proposal builds, as we accumulate use data and understand impacts for users, staff and the collection, modifications may be made. |
