Collection Development Policy, Maryland History and Culture: Overview [Draft]

The University of Maryland Libraries contain special collections in various formats which document the history and culture of the state of Maryland. The collections support research by a wide range of scholars including undergraduates, graduates, faculty, and other researchers whose work relies on materials documenting Maryland's history and culture.

Maryland-related holdings at the University of Maryland Libraries include:

  • more than 60,000 books and periodicals about Maryland, current and historical
  • a comprehensive set of Maryland state publications
    • The University of Maryland is a legally designated depository of all Maryland state documents
  • More than 2,500 maps of Maryland and the surrounding region . Highlights include:
    • the first map to show the Chesapeake Bay, published in 1590
    • Sanborn Fire Insurance maps for Maryland
    • maps produced by state and local governments
  • Baltimore News American Photograph Collection. Over 1.5 million photographic images, dating roughly from 1906 to 1986. The collection encompasses images of all aspects of the human experience - people, places, and events from Baltimore to the world.
  • over 300 archival and manuscript collections created by Maryland organizations and individuals. These collections document all eras of Maryland history, focusing on subjects such as the following:
  • papers of prominent Maryland literary figures, such as Reed Whittemore
  • record groups, university publications, photographs, and memorabilia documenting the history of the University of Maryland
  • online access to the Maryland State of Mind video series of Maryland Public Television
