Online/Faxed Articles for Faculty
Articles not owned by the Libraries are available by fax and online through a service called Ingenta.
As a UM faculty member how do I order articles in ingenta?
Subsidized document delivery is available for faculty. If you are a faculty member, you can order
articles not owned by the Libraries and costing less than $60. You should first set up an account by
logging in with the barcode number on the back of your ID.
Once you have conducted a search and found an article you would like to order, click on the "full text
availability" button next to the citation. Some articles are not available because of copyright or other
restrictions. If the article you would like is deliverable, you will see a confirmation of your request and
can then submit your order. The article will be faxed to you, or in many cases, will be available online as
a PDF file.
I receive a Reveal alert by email. How do I edit my reveal search alerts?
To edit your search alerts, click on the blue "manage profile" button and then on "my search alerts." Select a search statement by clicking on it, edit the search as you'd like, and click on "search". Then click on the blue "saved searches" button. Select the search by clicking on the checkbox next to it and then click on "add to alerts." A list of your current search alerts will then appear. Delete your old search alert by clicking on the "delete" button.
You cannot edit a tables of contents alert. Instead, delete your old alert and create a new one. To delete your tables of contents alert, click on the blue "manage profile" button and then on "my tables of contents". Select your alert and click on the "delete" button. To create the new tables of contents alert, search for a publication by using the search box at the top of the page. Then select the new publication by clicking in the checkbox next to the title. Click on the "add selected to list" button to create the alert.
Are there any free full-text articles in ingenta?
Free full-text is available for a few publications. These are generally journals to which we subscribe in print.
To find full text articles on your topic:
- Conduct a search. At the top of your results list you'll see two tabs: one for fax/ariel and one for online articles.
- Click on the Online Articles tab. We have free access to articles from most of the journals to which we subscribe. These articles have a red book icon next to them. We also have access to some articles from ScienceDirect.
- Click on the full-text availability button. If the article is available, a download
link to the PDF will appear next to the citation. Occasionally, an article might not be available because
of copyright restrictions. Some articles do not have a full text availability button and instead have a
link to ScienceDirect. We only have access to some articles from this service, generally from journals to which the Libraries have a paid subscription.
When I click on the "full text availability" button I get asked to register. Why?
Ingenta requires users to create a "profile" before viewing or ordering full-text. You are only required to enter your name, e-mail address, and country. For more information, see ingenta's privacy policy.
Do I have to log in to use ingenta?
You can search ingenta's database and view results without logging into ingenta. Just click on the blue "search options" button. However, to find out if an article is available in full-text and view any text, ingenta requires you to create an account. Their privacy policy is available online.
Creating an account is also necessary to set up an alert. Alerts regularly email you tables of contents or results of a search you specify.
Sometimes I see Ariel listed as a delivery option. What is Ariel?
Ariel is an electronic delivery method used primarily by interlibrary loan staff to provide desktop delivery of articles.
