Off-Campus Access to Library Resources
How do I connect to databases and e-journals from off-campus?Use Research Port to access databases and e-journals remotely. Log in with the barcode number on the back of your ID and your last name. Research Port is a gateway to all of our databases and e-journals. You can search multiple databases at once, save and email yourself articles, and browse a list of full-text e-journals. As of August 8, 2007, using VPN will no longer give you access to databases and e-journals. You will need to log in to Research Port while using VPN to access e-resources. (You will not need to log in to access Digital Collections.) Why can I no longer use VPN alone to connect to databases and e-journals?The VPN provided and managed by campus OIT allows access to a broad group of people who have some relationship with the University. However, the Libraries' license agreements with publishers and vendors restrict off-campus access to current students, faculty, and staff. It would be a breach of our contracts with database and e-journal providers to allow access to people not in those groups. Logging into Research Port is necessary to confirm that you are a current student, faculty, or staff. If you are not in one of these groups, you may use our databases and e-journals on campus only. I have e-journals bookmarked in my browser. How do I get access to articles on those sites now that VPN access has changed? If you have bookmarks for e-journals, you can edit those URLs to allow you to get access from off-campus. See Linking to Research Port for instructions on how to edit those URLs. Who may access electronic resources from off-campus?Most databases, reference works, and e-journals are restricted to current students, faculty, and staff at the University of Maryland. The general public may access free resources in Research Port. The general public may access the UM Libraries' online catalog. Which electronic resources may alumni and affilates use?For a list of alumni library privileges, see Information for Alumni. |
