Using WAM and VPN for Off-Campus Access to Library Resources
Research Port is the best way to access databases and e-journals remotely, but you can also dial into WAM or connect to VPN and use the resources on the Libraries' web page.
Using WAM

Users with a modem and a WAM account. (DSL and cable modem users should instead use Virtual Private Network.) |
How to connect: |
You must set up your computer to dial into your WAM account. Then go to the Libraries web page (http://www.lib.umd.edu) and click on Databases or E-Journals. More information on configuring dialup networking. |
Using the campus Virtual Private Network (VPN)
What you can access: |
All our databases, e-journals, and online reference works. |
Good for: |
DSL and cable modem users Anyone who doesn't want to dial into WAM modems |
How to connect: |
You must have a WAM account. Using VPN requires downloading and configuring some software. You connect to the Internet the way you usually do and then log into the VPN client (using your WAM login and password) when you want to use library databases and e-journals. ** Be sure to select the "UMD Tunnel All" or "UMD Wireless" option when logging into VPN. ** Instructions from UM Office of Information Technology. |
