GIS Workshop Registration – Spring 2008

Spring 2008 workshops are full. Check back in late May or early June for Summer workshop dates.

UM Libraries' Geographic Information Systems (GIS) workshops are very popular and we want to accommodate as many people as possible. Please do not register for the same workshop more than once. Instead, we recommend you contact us. In this way, you will have your specific questions addressed and receive one-on-one instruction. This will leave seats available for those who have never attended. Thank you for your cooperation.

We reserve the right to give priority registration to current UM students, faculty and staff. The names of alumni and all non-UM registrants will be placed on a reserve list. If vacancies remain, you will be contacted by e-mail at least 24 hours prior to the workshop.

Introduction to ArcGIS Desktop 9.2

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Microsoft Windows.
This is an exciting opportunity to learn the latest version of GIS software from ESRI. In this 2½-hour hands-on course you will be introduced to the fundamentals of GIS, basic navigation of the software, and the creation of different types of maps.

Adding Data to ArcGIS Desktop 9.2

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Excel; Introduction to ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 or familiarity with ArcGIS 9.
It is possible to use many types of data in a GIS—including that which you download from other sources or create yourself. This workshop will begin by introducing some basics of adding tabular data to ArcGIS Desktop 9.2. Following the introduction, workshop participants can choose tutorials to review at their own pace during class time. Tutorials include: Working with Census 2000 Data; Adding, Editing, Joining, and Relating Tables; Geocoding; and Mapping Locations by (X,Y) Coordinates. Instructors will be available for questions and assistance.

Intermediate Applications Using Vector Data in ArcGIS Desktop 9.2

Prerequisite: Familiarity with Microsoft Windows and Introduction to ArcGIS Desktop 9.2 or familiarity with ArcGIS 9.
This workshop will explore some of the analytical tools within ArcToolbox and focus on vector data creation and manipulation. The workshop will allow students to work through tutorials at their own pace and instructors will be available for questions and assistance.

Classes are held in 2109 McKeldin Library (2nd fl.), 6101 McKeldin Library (6th fl.), and 6107 McKeldin Library (6th fl.). Enrollment is limited to 18 people per class in 2109, 24 per class in 6101, and 30 people per class in 6107.
