Katherine Anne Porter SchoolThe last calendar year has seen the continued growth and development of the Katherine Anne Porter School (KAPS) in Wimberley, Texas. In addition to preparations for the successful graduation of forty-four seniors on May 31, 2003, KAPS has made several new additions to its facility. On October 8, 2002, the school celebrated the opening of a new student library and two large classrooms, one devoted to teaching yoga and theater, the other for science classes. The ninth annual Literary Festival and Java Jive fundraiser, co-sponsored by the Katherine Anne Porter School and the Writers' League of Texas, took place on February 9, 2003. Over three hundred people attended the event, which included live readings from literary contest submissions, music, and prizes. Nicole Green and Austin Higgin shared first prize in the five to ten age category, Higgin for his story entitled "Carpet Spell" and Green for two short stories and a poem entitled "Rapunzel." Bonnye Cope won first prize in the fifteen to eighteen age category for her story "Bryar Rose," while Bonnye's sister Lorrie Cope took the eleven to fourteen age category for her submission, a poem entitled "Time." Top honors in the eighteen and over category went to retired Wimberley engineer Jan Hendrix for his story "My Brother's Keeper." Local writer, Linda Allen and Dr. Gary Hartman, Professor and Director of Music Archives at Southwest Texas State University judged the submissions and presented prizes to the winners. KAPS also mounted a student talent show on Katherine Anne Porter's birthday, May 15, 2003. Organized by students Remy Stephens and Steven Ramon, the event featured live singing and music by staff and students, poetry readings, juggling, and animal tricks. Guest poet, Kathleen Pierce read excerpts from "The Grave." KAPS is currently enrolling students for next year,
however, space is limited. KAPS is a free, accredited charter high
school with a special emphasis on the creative arts. Donations are
tax deductible and very welcome. Dr. Yana Bland, P.O. Box 2053, Wimberley,
