Porter House Preservation UpdateTom Grimes, Director of the MFA Program in Creative Writing program at Southwest Texas State University, has reported that purchase of the Porter House in Kyle for restoration and use as a creative writing center has been completed. The house was purchased on March 9 by the Hays County Preservation Associates, a group of concerned local citizens who worked with Carroll Wiley of the SWT Support Foundation and with Grimes. The group is now consulting architects about plans for restoration, using period photographs as a guide to its goals. Grimes, who is himself a Texas writer with three novels to his credit, says that when work is complete a portion of the house will be used for a writer-in-residence program in association with SWT. The living room and dining room of the house will continue to serve as a museum. Funds are still needed to endow the maintenance of the house. Contributions should be made out to Friends of the Hays County Historical Commission--Preservation Associates, Inc. and designated to the Porter House Preservation Project. They can be mailed to 1717 N. Burleson Street, Kyle, TX 78640. |
