Don West Broadcasting & Cable Photo Archive

INTRODUCTION:

In the summer of 2002, the Library of American Broadcasting proudly became the archival home for the photo archive of Broadcasting & Cable Magazine. This is truly a signficant acquisition, for since its very first issue on October 15, 1931, the magazine has documented the broadcasting industry. Founded by Sol Taishoff and Martin Codell, the publication has undergone many changes, reflecting the changes in the broadcasting industry itself. In January 1941, it went from being a semi-monthly to the weekly publication that it is today. It's name changed to Broadcasting/Telecasting in 1945 and back to BROADCASTING in 1957. With the March 1, 1993 issue, the magazine became BROADCASTING & CABLE. In 1986 the magazine was sold to Times Mirror and five years later to Reed Business, the current owner of the magazine http://www.broadcastingcable.com/index.asp

DON WEST:

The collection is named after Don West who joined the magazine's Washington headquarters in 1953 after service in the Korean War and several journalistic postings in the Southwest. He subsequently served for 13 years in New York and as managing editor of the co-owned Television magazine. After service as assistant to the president of CBS Inc. he rejoined Broadcasting as managing editor in 1971. He succeeded to the editorship after Sol Taishoff's death in 1982 and retired in 2001.

CONTENT:

The collection contains over 30,000 files on men and women involved in all aspects of radio and television broadcasting. Being the photo record of a business magazine, the collection is particularly strong in photos of network heads, station owners, advertising salesmen, producers, directors, and others involved in the business of broadcasting. However, there are many files covering the on-air talent, actors, actresses, musicians.

The collection also contains subject files illustrating a wide variety of subjects important to broadcasting, including commercials, companies, equipment, networks, news, organizations, shows, sports, stations.

However, the collection is more than just a series of photographs. Many of the photographs are accompanied by the text and captioning they appeared with when they were published in the magazine. Many files also contain press releases and newspaper clippings relating to the individual in question. The photos themselves often include names and dates on the back, giving additional information about the subjects.

PRESERVATION EFFORTS:

When the collection arrived at the Library of American Broadcasting in the summer of 2002, it was already organized in a roughly alphabeltical arrangement. However, no list its contents existed and the collection still needed a great deal of organization to make it fully accessible to researchers. Recognizing the significance of this collection, Douglas Gomery, Professor of journalism in the Philip Merril School of Journalism at the University of Maryland and Resident Scholar at the LAB, proposed recruiting his students to organize the collection and create a list of its contents. During the Spring Semesters of 2003, 2004, and 2005, Professor Gomery and his students, under the supervision of Michael Henry, reboxed and refoldered the collection and created the lengthy inventory listed above.

The Library of American Broadcasting would like to thank the following students for their hard work and dedication to the project. Without their assistance, the Don West Broadcasting & Cable Photo Archive would not be the accessible resource it is today:
