Donald H. Kirkley, Jr. CollectionProcessed by: Amy MasciolaJuly 1995 35 lin. ft. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Donald H. Kirkley, Jr. Collection is made up largely of audiotapes and books. There are some cassette tapes, records, videotapes, and pamphlets. Many of the reel-to-reel tapes are recordings of political speeches from the World War II era. Radio talk shows, quiz shows, and plays are also well-represented. The books are about broadcasting. The inclusive dates of the collection are from approximately 1931 through 1991. The bulk of the material is from the period 1945 through 1951.
PROVENANCE This series contains 129 books, several issues from seven journals, and miscellaneous printed materials such as photocopies, programs, and pamphlets. Most of the printed materials pertain to the broadcasting industry and its history. Series I contains the following subseries:
I: Books Series II: Reel-to-Reel Tapes (13 lin. ft.) This series contains 206 reel-to-reel audiotapes. Political speeches of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman make up the bulk of the first subseries (including the "Iron Curtain" speech by Winston Churchill). Radio programs such as Columbia Workshop and Hear It Now make up a significant portion of the series as well as some quiz shows and soap operas. Series II contains the following subseries:
I: Political Speeches This series contains five videotapes including a betamax recording of the 1990 Rodney King beating. Series IV: Cassette Tapes (2 lin. ft.) This series contains thirteen cassette tapes. Most are oral history recordings. Series V: Records (.5 lin. ft.) This series contains ten records. Most are promotional recordings from the 1970s. Series VI: Photographs (0.25 lin. ft.)
The photograph component of the D.H. Kirkley Collection contains 70 photographs. The largest number of the photographs (56) are of television and movie westerns. The remaining photographs are of television comedies with western themes (7) and miscellaneous television comedies and dramas. The photographs range in date from 1958-1970. Search Audio Recordings |
