This March 31, 1943 telegram from Betty Garde's friend, the musical comedy star Madeleine Caroll, bears a rather cryptic message:
"Not permitted to say what I really want to you but I think you know what it is. Madeleine Carroll. "
Given that the message was sent to the St. James Theatre on "Oklahoma's" opening night, one can speculate that the taboo phrase might have been "good luck."
