Upcoming Events:
The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., has opened a new exhibition, "Separate and Unequaled: Black Baseball in the District of Columbia," which is a collaboration between the HSW and the Smithsonian's Anacostia Community Museum. This exhibition tells the story of how, from Reconstruction to the second half of the 20th century, baseball was played in Washington, D.C., on segregated fields. This exhibition looks at the phenomenal popularity and community draw of this sport when played by African Americans. Featured are such personalities as Josh Gibson and "Buck" Leonard, star players of the Homestead Grays. The show also highlights community teams that gave rise to the various amateur, collegiate and semi-pro black baseball teams and leagues. "Discover Greatness: An Illustrated History of the Negro Baseball Leagues," developed by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, accompanies the Smithsonian exhibition. Through photographs and memorabilia, this traveling exhibit presents a timeline of the history of blacks in baseball. Both exhibitions are at the Historical Society from May through October 2008. The annual Washington History Studies Conference, co-sponsored by the DC Public Library's Washingtoniana Division and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., will be held on November 13-15, 2008, at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., 801 K Street, NW, at Mount Vernon Square. This year, the conference will feature two tracks, one of which will focus on the fortieth anniversary of the 1968 riots.
