Welcome!
The local arrangements and program committees invite you to join us in Dover, Delaware, for the fall meeting of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference. From October 20 through October 23, we will convene in historic Dover, the capital of
the First State. Discover what Delaware has to offer — with a plethora of historic sites, modern attractions, and pristine nature preserves, there is plenty for everyone to see and do.
The program begins with an address by archivist, educator, and profession leader Lee Stout. Join us as he outlines some recent responses to electronic records and technological change, and discusses implications for archives and our mission to collect,
preserve, and make available unique records and materials that form the basis of historical research. The theme, "Things Unique: Archives, Culture, and History," will be given a different twist by Lee Jennings, our luncheon speaker. Mr. Jennings will recount his research in regional and local archives to uncover unique perspectives in the preservation and historical interpretation of First State heritage sites. In addition, twenty-two concurrent sessions with topics ranging from the Voting Rights Act to a digital preservation project focused on the birth of the "Dot Coms," and from the current state of archival education to our shared musical heritage, will provide additional opportunities for you to investigate our theme.
Our Friday evening reception will be held at the Delaware Public Archives, located in the heart of downtown Dover's historic district.
Get in the Halloween spirit at this costume-optional event (and get full — there will be LOTS of food). Explore our past in the "100 Stories" exhibit, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the agency's creation. Enjoy behind-the-scenes tours of our new modern archival facility. After the reception, join us (if you dare!) for a haunting visit to the Wicked Woods.
We have a full line-up of tours to showcase the diversity of the Dover area. Go for a sunrise tour of Bombay Hook
National Wildlife Refuge, and be astounded by the natural beauty of waterfowl populations at their peaks. Or speed
things up at Dover Downs, and go behind the scenes at the Monster Mile! Relive the rural past at the Delaware
Agricultural Museum and Village. Tour the John Dickinson Plantation, the childhood home of the "Penman of the
Revolution," and a national historic landmark. Take flight through history at the Air Mobility Command Museum
with over 20,000 square feet of aircraft displays. Visit Barrett's Chapel, often called the "Cradle of Methodism." Or
take a guided walking tour of The First State Heritage Park at Dover, boasting 22 historic sites and museums. And
you certainly don't want to miss the Haunting on the Green, a special ghost tour of downtown Dover's haunted
history. Check the "On Your Own" section for what we couldn't fit in!
Join us in Dover for a rich program and many things to see and do. Catch up with old friends and make new ones, share your knowledge and learn something new, bring your experience and share it with others. We look forward to welcoming you!
