Welcome!

The Program and Local Arrangements Committees for the Fall 2007 MARAC meeting invite you to join in a celebration this November 1–3 in historic Williamsburg, Virginia. The theme of the conference, Celebrate! Virginia's 400th and MARAC's 35th Anniversaries, recognizes the quadricentennial of the founding of Jamestown as well as the 35th anniversary of the organization of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference. This three-day meeting will include workshops, sessions, tours, and special anniversary activities.

Williamsburg was the thriving colonial capital of Virginia. From 1699 to 1780, Williamsburg was the political, cultural, and educational center of what was then the largest, most populous, and most influential of the American colonies. Near the end of the Revolutionary War and through the influence of Thomas Jefferson, the seat of government of Virginia was moved up the peninsula to the safer and more centrally located city of Richmond. For nearly a century and a half afterward, Williamsburg was a simple, quiet college town, home of the College of William and Mary. Today, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation operates the world's largest living history museum.

It is appropriate that MARAC gather in historic Williamsburg during Jamestown's 400th anniversary to explore new ideas and to celebrate our legacy. During the meeting, archivists will benefit from a wide array of informative education sessions, preconference workshops, tours of local repositories, special events, exhibits, and networking opportunities. A reception in the Special Collections Research Center of the Swem Library on the campus of the College of William and Mary will feature special anniversary activities, and attendees may choose to eat dinner afterward in one of the acclaimed restaurants on Merchant's Square.

The plenary address will feature Cary Carson, retired Vice President of the Research Division, Colonial Williamsburg, and Senior Principal Investigator, Jamestown Reassessment Project. Just in time for Jamestown's 400th birthday, Dr. Carson will discuss stunning, new, archaeological discoveries and historical research about the oldest town in English America.

The luncheon program includes a presentation by Blair Rudes, Associate Professor, Applied Linguistics Program, Department of English, University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Rudes resurrected the Virginia Algonquian language and taught it to the actors in the 2005 movie, The New World.

There are twenty-one sessions to select from and many have a colonial theme, in keeping with the conference locale. Session offerings include colonial spies, digital repositories, re-enactors and interpreters, medical archives, restoring Colonial Williamsburg, Revolutionary War personalities, church records, archives and manuscripts in living history museums, appraisal and accountability, wine making, government security issues in personal papers, moving archives, historic gardens, African-American resources, colonial records preservation, archivists and anniversaries, changing jobs, and documenting religious traditions.

Take a tour of Historic Jamestown and Jamestown Settlement or the Williamsburg Winery, or explore the nearby sights on your own. The Colonial Williamsburg historic area, Yorktown, and the James River plantations are just a short drive away. There's something for everyone on the program in Williamsburg, and we look forward to seeing you there!
