Welcome!
"...Chautauqua is part of the American imagination. It belongs with Concord, Massachusetts, or Hannibal, Missouri…as one of those places that help us define who we are or what we believe in" (David McCullough).
The Program and Local Arrangement Committees for the Spring 2008 MARAC meeting invite you to join them this May 1-3 for a unique experience at the Chautauqua Institution. The theme of the conference, "Education Outside the Box," recognizes over a hundred years of adult education and summer recreation at Chautauqua that have helped to shape modern American cultural history.
The Chautauqua Institution is a non-profit, 750-acre educational center along Lake Chautauqua in Western New York State. Founded in 1874 by inventor Lewis Miller and Methodist Bishop John Heyl Vincent as a normal school to train Sunday School teachers, Chautauqua grew to become a national forum for open discussion of public issues, international relations, literature and science. This is especially true of its lecture series, which has featured some of the most influential figures of history including Amelia Earhart, Jacob Riis, and Jane Addams. Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivered his famous "I Hate War" speech from the Amphitheater platform.

The Plenary Address will feature Joseph Persico, historian, biographer, and speech-writer for New York Governor and United States Vice President, Nelson Rockefeller. His address, entitled "The Story Behind the Books," will describe the role of archivists and reference librarians in the writing of his twelve books.
The luncheon program, which will take place in the formal dining room of the Athenaeum Hotel, includes a presentation by historian David J. Cope on the 1939 World's Fair.
The many sessions will focus on different aspects of education: how to use records to teach, how records demonstrate trends in education, and how we teach ourselves. The program will also feature a "discussion track," where attendees will participate in moderated conversations on topics and issues that are emerging in our profession.
