Legal Citations -- finding materials

Scope:This guide is a partial list to help you locate legal materials in the University of Maryland Libraries or online using a legal citation or abbreviation. Email the subject area specialist at travismj@umd.edu for more information. The left column gives the standard legal citation, the middle column gives the corresponding location(s) and call number for that citation, as well as URL when available, and the column on the right side gives the full title and "see also" references.
Many of these legal publications are also available online through our subscriptions to Westlaw Campus Research and Lexis Nexic Academic. The locations of print verisons are noted by abbreviation, the meanings of which are:
  • MCK STACKS = McKeldin Book Stacks, located on various floors of McKeldin Library according to call number.
  • MCK PERSTK = McKeldin Periodical Stacks, located on various floors of McKeldin on the West side on movable shelving.
  • MCKREF = McKeldin Reference Collection, located on the first floor of McKeldin.
  • GOVDOC = Government Documents Collection, 4th floor of McKeldin.
  • MD = Maryland Room, first floor of Hornbake Library.
  • STORAGE = Off-site storage, specific volumes may be paged using this form. Allow a few days for delivery.
  • Lexis = available through our subscription to LexisNexis Academic. Regardless of our print coverage, Lexis should cover ALL dates for publications listed.
  • WestLaw = available through our subscription to WestLaw Campus Research. Regardless of our print coverage, WestLaw should cover ALL dates for publications listed.
(Most recent federal legislative information is also freely available through GPO Access or Thomas.)

Legal citations generally consist of the volume, followed by the abbreviated title, followed by the page number(s) -- for example, 54 A. 233 would be volume 54 of the Atlantic Reporter, page 233.
