How the Pay-for-Print System Works

Printing from Library Computers

  • You must preview every print job to insure the quality of the job. The library does not offer refunds on print jobs. To preview your print job, click on the file menu, then select Print Preview. An image of the first page of the document will appear on the screen. Click on the Zoom In button to preview the page. Use the Next Page and Prev Page buttons to move from page to page.
  • After you have previewed the page(s), click on the Print button. The print screen will appear. Select the range of pages you want to print, check the number of copies, then click OK.
  • The Pharos Pop-up client window will appear. Enter your name (for example, John Doe). Enter a word or words to identify your print job. You may send multiple print jobs to the print station before actually printing.
  • Proceed to a print station when you are ready to print your print jobs.
  • Swipe your University ID card or a visitor card through the card reader on top of the printer monitor. The print job screen will indicate the $ balance on your card. You can add money to your card at any of 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the libraries.
  • Identify your print job(s) on the print job screen and click on the job(s). You can select multiple print jobs by holding down the control key while clicking on each job. The screen will show the total number of pages to print, the cost, and the remaining $ balance on your card.
  • Click on the Print Button and your job(s) will be printed. Only clicking on the Print Button will debit your card.

  • Your print job(s) will remain in the print queue for two hours or until printed.

Pay-for-Print FAQs

Why are the Libraries charging patrons to print their results?
The Libraries have a networked pay-for-print solution in order to provide both better quality printing for our patrons and to recover the costs of that printing.

How will I pay for my printing?
Patrons can use Terrapin Express or purchase a visitor card to pay for their printing. Visitor cards can be purchased for $1 (with $0.20 of pre-encoded value) at 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the Libraries. The printer stations will not accept cash.

What if I need to add money to my card?
Patrons can add money to either their University photo ID or to their Visitor card at 13 Copy Card ATMs throughout the Libraries.

What will the cost for printing be?
Pay-for-Print is $.10 per page. This charge is consistent with WAM lab print pricing.

What happens if I make a mistake? Will I be charged?
Yes. Whenever the system permits, you should preview your work by using the browser's Print Preview capability before sending it for printing. It is your responsibility to do so to determine if there are problems.

What do I do if the printer doesn't work?
Go to the Information/Service Plus desk for assistance. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

How can I get my research results without having to pay for them?
Most databases allow you to email or download to floppy disk. The other alternative is paper and pencil.

How can I make suggestions on making the system work better?
Many of the libraries have suggestion boxes for your ideas. If there is no box, please feel free to write out your suggestions and give them to personnel at the Information/Service Plus desk in the library you are using.
