Basic Sources of Drug Identification

Information on drug identification sources is largely based on the research guide Drug and Toxicology Information , and the book Introduction to Reference Sources in the Health Sciences , 4th edition. JoAnne Boorkman, Jeffrey T. Huber, and Fred W. Roper, editors. Please refer to this guide for additional drug information sources.

    American Drug Index .
    Location: McKeldin Reference RS51 .A512 2005
    Provides information on the use of prescription and over the counter drugs. The indexing lists generic names, but cross-indexing allows finding drugs when the major ingredient is the known.

    USP Dictionary of USAN and International Drug Names .
    Location: McKeldin Reference Stacks RS55 .U58 2004
    Provides basic drug information including the year in which the proprietary name was adopted.

    Merck Index: An Encyclopedia of Chemicals, Drugs, and Biologicals. 13th edition.
    Location: Chemistry Reference and McKeldin Reference RS51 .M4 2001
    Provides chemical names, structural formulas, and use of chemicals and drugs. Use the proprietary Name Index in the back of the book to locate descriptive paragraph information on each drug.
