Web Page created by Karen Patterson, Education Librarian, UM Libraries
The University of Maryland Libraries have many resources that will help
with your research. If you need additional
information, please talk with a reference librarian at McKeldin Library's
Service Plus Information Desk or contact Karen Patterson, Education
Librarian.
Because of licensing agreements, access to bibliographic databases
and electronic journals is restricted to UM faculty, staff, and
students. These resources may be accessed from off campus; consult Remote
access for further information. For a complete list of electronic resources available to University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students, as well as information about the full range of library materials and services, consult the UM Libraries' home page.
Table of Contents
It is useful when beginning your research to first consult reference sources that will give you an introduction to your topic and provide background information, historical context, examples of application, reviews of major research, and a bibliography of suggestions for further reading. The McKeldin Reference collection contains numerous education encyclopedias and handbooks that provide this kind of information. Several of them are listed below along with other almanacs, encyclopedias and handbooks providing background information on various ethnic groups. Consult the "encyclopedia and handbook" section of the Education Guide for a complete list.

STEP TWO: Finding Books
in the UM Libraries
Search the UM Libraries
catalog for books and other materials such as government documents and videos available through the
UM Libraries.
Start with a words anywhere search.
A more specific way to search is by using the subject beginning with search using Library of Congress subject headings. You can focus your search by using subject headings you have identified through your word search. Additional information about how to use the Catalog is available in the online Catalog Guide.
You may request material not owned in the University of Maryland system through Interlibrary Loan.
You may also search the holdings of hundreds of libraries through the Worldcat database.
STEP THREE: Finding journal articles
To do a thorough and up-to-date job researching your topic you will have to find relevant journal articles. The following journals are some of the most important in the field of higher of education and student affairs.

Using Databases to Identify Additional Articles
While the above journals are excellent resources for your research needs, many other journals may contain relevant articles.
Databases are the best resources to use to identify articles published in journals. The UM Libraries subscribe to several hundred databases, which are accessible via the Libraries' homepage. Since your topics vary widely, you will need to investigate the best databases for your needs. The "Find Databases" page on ResearchPort categorizes databases by broad subject area and is a good place to begin. However, the following list includes some of most important databases according to subject area.
IMPORTANT: To access these databases from off campus you must use
Research Port. Be sure to log in to Research Port, using your Directory ID. (This is the same login you use for email, ELMS, ARES, and
other campus services.)
