STEP TWO: Finding Books in the UM Libraries

Search the UM Libraries catalog, for books and other materials such as documents and videos available through the UM Libraries.
Start with a "words anywhere" search.
Also try to find books using the "subject beginning with." A possible broad subject heading is cognition in old age. You can also search using subjects you have identified through your word search. Additional information about how to use the Catalog is available in an online Catalog Guide.
You may request material not owned in the University of Maryland system through Interlibrary Loan.

STEP THREE: Using databases to find jounal articles

To do a thorough and up-to-date job researching your topic you will have to find relevant journal articles. Databases are the best resources to use to identify articles published in journals. The UM Libraries subscribe to several hundred databases, which are accessible via the Libraries' homepage. The following databases are most relevant to the kinds of topics you will need to do research in this course.

IMPORTANT: To access the following databases from off campus, you must either use your WAM account to dial into the campus network or go through ResearchPort.

  • Academic Search Premier
Information about articles from 3000 general, humanities, social science, and science periodicals, including over 1700 peer-reviewed journals. About one-third of the articles are available fulltext.

  • Ageline (1978- )

Includes original abstracts of journal articles, books, book chapters, and research reports on various aging-related topics which include the social sciences, health and health care, consumer/personal and service issues. International coverage with most documents in English.

  • Digital Dissertations

Most ERIC ED documents are availble on microfiche and are housed in McKeldin Library Periodicals Room. From 1993 on ERIC documents from are available through E*Subscribe, a full-text database. The Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors (MCK REF Z695.1.E3E34) identifies subject terms used in the CIJE and other ERIC publications. An online ERIC thesaurus is part of the database.

STEP FOUR: Properly Using Citations

  • Documentation Guidelines: Citing Sources Within Your Paper

  • The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association
This is a style manual for manuscript preparation that is used by scholars both in and outside of the field of psychology. Though the Manual is not available electronically, the "APA Style Resources" page on Psych Web provides links to a number of guides and Web pages that provide writing tips and suggestions for its application.
