Library Catalogs (Find Books, Documents, and more)
When accessing subscription databases from off-campus, you will have to login using your last name and the 14-digit number on the back of your student i.d. card.
- UM Libraries'
online catalog
Use the online catalog to search for books and documents on your topic
available in the UM Library System. Start with a "words anywhere"
search.
Example: "united states" and korea
and "nuclear weapons"
Once you have found some relevant records by using a keyword search, you can use the subject headings in the records to find more materials.
Example:
Nuclear weapons -- Government policy -- Korea (North)
You must also use the catalog to find out whether the Libraries subscribe
to a particular journal. Type in the journal title (not the article
title) under "Title beginning with" in the pull-down menu. Example: Jane's International Defense Review

Combined catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide.
Items not owned by the University System of Maryland libraries can be
requested online for borrowing through interlibrary loan; click on the yellow "FindIt" button, then click on "ILL."

Combined catalog of books and other materials in major research libraries.
Items not owned by the University System of Maryland libraries can be
requested online for borrowing through interlibrary loan; click on "Request."

Guides are also available or you can search special collection databases.

News & Current Events Databases
Note: To access subscription databases on campus, simply click
on the links below. Otherwise, click on the "Off-Campus Access" link below
and log in to Research Port using your 14-digit campus identification number
(on the back of your campus ID card) and your last name.
- (Lexis-Nexis) Academic
Universe
Comprehensive database for legal and business information. Also, mostly
full-text access to US and international newspapers, journals, wire
services, and news transcripts including the Washington Post (1977 -)
and the New York Times (1980 -) .
- CQ Researcher
Full-text coverage of the CQ (Congressional Quarterly) Researcher publication from 1992 to the present. Unique database that selects specific timely topics and presents comprehensive information.
This information includes history and background information about the topic, a detailed report of the current situation,
relevant pro & con arguments, bibliographies, and contact information.
- CQ Weekly (Report)
Weekly legislative news and analysis, full text from 1983 to the present.
- Keesing's Record of World Events
Online
Culled from the world's press and information services, Keesing's distills
political, economic and social events into concise, detailed reports
for the years 1960 to the present.
- National Journal Group's Policy Central
Full-text, searchable database of the National Journal Group's publications (National
Journal, Hotline, Congress Daily, Almanac of American Politics) plus markup reports, public
opinion data, and an archive of television campaign ads with streaming audio and video.
- New York Times Historical
The New York Times Historical (1851-2001) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue.
- Washington Post Historical
The Washington Post (1877-1988) offers full page and article images with searchable full text back to the first issue. The collection includes digital reproductions providing access to every page from every available issue.
