Library Catalogs (Find Books, Documents, and more)

When accessing subscription databases from off-campus, you will have to login using your last name and the 14-digit number on the back of your student i.d. card.
  • UM Libraries' online catalog
    Use the online catalog to search for books and documents on your topic available in the UM Library System. Start with a "words anywhere" search.
    Example: "east* europe*" and minorities
    You must also use the catalog to find out whether the Libraries subscribe to a particular journal. Type in the journal title (not the article title) under "Title beginning with" in the pull-down menu.

  • WorldCat
    Combined catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide. Items not owned by the University System of Maryland libraries can be requested online for borrowing through interlibrary loan; click on the yellow "FindIt" button, then click on "ILL."

  • RLG Union Catalog (RLIN)
    Combined catalog of books and other materials in major research libraries. Items not owned by the University System of Maryland libraries can be requested online for borrowing through interlibrary loan; click on "Request."

  • Center for Research Libraries Catalog
    "CRL makes its vast collections of newspapers, microform, journals, dissertations and other materials available via interlibrary loan and electronic document delivery." Topic Guides are also available or you can search special collection databases.

Region-Specific Databases/Indexes

  • ABSEES: American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies
    ABSEES covers North American (U.S. and Canadian) scholarship on East-Central Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet Union. It contains bibliographic records for journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, online resources, and selected government publications.

  • EBSEES: European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies
    The EBSEES (European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies) covers European scholarship on Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet Union. It contains bibliographic records for journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, and selected government publications.

  • Index Islamicus. London: Mansell, 1983 - .
    Index to "new books, articles, and reviews on Islam and the Muslim world."

  • Anthropological Literature
    Comprehensive international resource for the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and related interdisciplinary research.

  • CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online
    International affairs site that "publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 on that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, and proceedings from conferences."

  • PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service) International
    Indexes a wide variety of journal articles, research reports, and government documents in the social sciences and public affairs fields.

  • International Political Science Abstracts
    Indexes and abstracts from international periodicals, 1989 to the present.

  • Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
    Abstracts of journal articles and dissertations from over 1,000 sources. Combined database of the former "Political Science Abstracts" and "ABC PolSci." 1975 -.

  • Social Sciences Abstracts
    Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 520 publications with some links to full-text in other EBSCO databases.

  • SocIndex
    Contains full text for 242 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 72 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for 547 books and monographs, and full text for 6,711 conference papers.

  • ATLA Religion Index
    Provides abstracts and indexing for articles, essays, and book reviews in over 1550 journals and multi-author works dealing with religious and theological scholarship. International in scope and language coverage.

  • Contemporary Women's Issues
    Indexes 1,500 sources including books and journals and provides links to full-text when available. Over 35,000 records are available and are updated on a weekly basis.

  • Historical Abstracts
    Information on articles, books, and dissertations about non-U.S. and non-Canadian history from 1450 to the present. Covers more than 2000 journals in 50 languages. Includes links to full text of selected journal articles.

    The online library of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Comprises 20 book collections by theme, containing all OECD monographs and reports, most OECD periodicals, and the OECD statistical databases.

    Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Reports online. Includes full-text summaries and translations from around the world of newspaper articles, conference proceedings, radio and television broadcasts, non-classified technical reports, and local media sources.

  • Ethnic Newswatch
    Full-text bilingual (English/Spanish) database of 200 publications of the ethnic, minority, and native press.

  • Factiva
    Database of international news sources. Can be searched by region.

  • (Lexis-Nexis) Academic Universe
    Comprehensive database for legal and business information. Also, mostly full-text access to US and international newspapers, journals, wire services, and news transcripts including the Washington Post (1977 -) and the New York Times (1980 -) .

  • Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Viewswire
    Daily news updates on 195 countries covering politics, economies, finance, business, and regulations.

  • Alternative Press Index
    Indexes nearly 300 alternative, radical, and left journals, newspapers, and magazines and includes selected abstracts from research journals.

  • Keesing's Record of World Events Online
    Culled from the world's press and information services, Keesing's distills political, economic and social events into concise, detailed reports for the years 1960 to the present.

  • ABYZ NewsLinks
