Preliminary Searching Strategy

DEFINE YOUR TOPIC
Have a clear idea of your topic and the issues or concepts involved. Think of synonyms to describe the issues/concepts. Remember that others may describe topic differently.

DECIDE WHAT KINDS OF SOURCES YOU NEED
Think about - what kinds of sources would have the information you need. Very current business issues = newspaper articles; overview of an industry = handbook or book; list of companies = directories

Use to get profiles of consumer. Statistics based on an annual survey, show the buying tastes of the US public. Age, education, income of the consumer is matched with the kind of products he/she buy.

Choices II (Simmons Study of Media and Markets), 1997. A CD-ROM product available on Workstation #64 (behind the Information Desk) in McKeldin. Choices II is a competitive product to Mediamark Research above. It is used to get a profile of consumer. Choices II results may be saved to a disc and uploaded into a spreadsheet such as Excel.

Simmons Tutorial

The Simmons Tutorial is very useful especially if one is not at all familiar with the Simmons source.

Directories are useful to locate this information.

Dow Jones Interactive
This database contains a Publications Library which covers over 6500 business focused full text publications, including newspapers and magazines.

Competitors

SIC and NAICS codes are used in some directories and are very important in tracking similar companies or competitors. The Census Department Home Page has links to SIC and NAICS code and provides code definitions and descriptions. SIC and NAICS from Census

Combines three complementary databases: Business & Industry, Business & Management Practices, and TableBase. Broad business coverage, includes popular business magazines.

Dow Jones Interactive
This database contains a Publications Library which covers over 6500 business focused full text publications, including newspapers and magazines.

ABI/Inform
Broad coverage of research oriented journals and perspective on companies. About 70% full text.

Academic Universe Lexis/Nexis
Full text coverage of newspapers and magazines dealing with all aspects of business, includes company information based on Securities & Exchanges Commission filings.

VictorWeb (Online Catalog)

VictorWeb
Use to find periodical titles owned by McKeldin Library or other libraries in the University of Maryland System. This is the next step after you searched the above Periodical Indexes and found some articles of interest which were not available in full text.
