What to do With a Known Citation: book, book chapter, journal article

When using the above encyclopedias and other sources, be sure to look at the bibliography/references in order to further your research. You will need to determine if we own the book or journal article and/or if the article is available fulltext.
(BOOK) - Search the catalog under the author or title using the Basic Search

  • Quirey, Belinda. May I Have the Pleasure? The Story of Popular Dancing London, 1976

(BOOK CHAPTER) - Search the catalog under the author/editor or title of the BOOK not the author/title of the chapter.

  • Donaldson, Tamsin. "Making a Song (and Dance) in South-Eastern Australia." In Songs of Aboriginal Australia, edited by Margaret Clunies Ross, pp. 14-42. Sydney, 1987

JOURNAL ARTICLE
Use the Full Text Finder (http://www.lib.umd.edu/ETC/fulltext.html)(Home page - search box: full text finder)
Use the full text finder to find articles when you already have the citation information
OR Use the JOURNAL SUBSET of the Catalog

  • Cottle, Simon. 'La Garrocha', Flamenco as an Expression of Community. Contemporary Review; Sep87, vol. 251 Issue 1460, p140-142

Online Catalog

Use The Catalog to locate books.

Best strategy is to use the subject word/s search and the name of the country and the word danc*:
    danc* and australia
    danc* and egypt
danc* and (egypt or arab or middle east*)
    danc* and (greece or greek)

  • The asterisk following danc* = truncation and will retrieve words with danc as the root - dance or dancing or dancer or dances..

Once you have identified relevant books, be sure to look at the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
These headings appear when you view the full information. Why look at the LC headings?
If you follow the Library of Congress Subject heading link you will identify additional books on your topic.
Also use the LC headings to refine your search, (narrow or broad) by adding the headings to your word search.

Once you know the beginning subject words you can also search by: Subject beginning with...:

    dance music
    dance -- Anthropological aspects--
