What to do With a Known Journal Citation

Sometimes you will already have a journal article citation from your professor or a reference list. You will need to determine if we own the journal and/or if the article is available fulltext. Use the Full Text Finder (http://www.lib.umd.edu/ETC/fulltext.html or type in full text finder in the search box on the libraries homepage)

Online Catalog

Use
The Catalog to locate bibliographies, books and videos about your topic or dancer or choreographer.
  • Researching a topic:
    Word/s anywhere:
    tango
    ballet and (19th or nineteenth)
    danc* and history and 20th
    danc* and europe and 20th
    (medieval or middle ages) and danc*
    musicals and danc*
    vaudeville and danc*
    "hip hop" and danc*

  • The asterisk following danc* = truncation and will retrieve words with danc as the root - dance or dancing or dancer or dances..
    The quotation marks = phrase searching

    Once you have identified relevant books, be sure to at the Library of Congress Subject Headings. These headings appear when you view the full information. Why look at the LC headings?
    If you follow the Library of Congress Subject heading link you will identify additional books on your topic.
    Also use the LC headings to refine your search, (narrow or broad) by adding the headings to your word search.

    A search for books on the topic of the history of ballet, conducted using keywords: ballet and history. will retrieve over 200 items. Many will probably not be relevant.
    Find one or two that are relevant, follow the subject heading/s, ballet - history; ballet-russia-history; ballet-history-18th century; ballet-france-history-18th century

    Some sample Subject Headings:
    tango (dance)
    modern dance history
    afro-american dance history
    dancing england history / dance england history
    dancing russian history
    Using danc* as a subject word should retrieve all the materials that have been assigned dance or dancing as a subject heading.

    Once you know the beginning subject words you can also search by: Subject beginning with...:
    musicals
    dance england
    ballet history
    Be sure to look at the sub-divisions: criticism; history; anthropological; country; philosophy...

    Research Port, Databases and Find It

  • Research Port is the Libraries gateway to the databases and electronic journals and off campus access. When using a database, be sure to follow the button. This will direct you to the available full text, the catalog (if the library subscribes to the journal), or Interlibrary Loan if full-text is not available and if the Libraries do not subscribe to the journal or own the needed vol/issue.

    • Academic Search Premier Multidisciplinary, covers dance topics.

    • America. History and Life
      Provides abstracts and some full-text of journal articles on United States and Canadian history. The history of dance is included.
    • Historical Abstracts
      Provides abstracts and some full-text of journal articles on history outside of the United States and Canada. The history of dance is included.

      Strategies for America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts: US and World history can be searched at the same time.
      Start with a keyword search, look at subjects
      Limits: LANGUAGE = english / DOCUMENT TYPE = article / CONTENT TIME PERIOD
      danc* and gender in KEYWORDS
      isadora duncan in KEYWORDS
      ballet in KEYWORDS
      Some SUBJECT TERMS: blacks and dance / modern dance

    • International Bibliography of Theatre and Dance Covers all aspects of dance.

    • Jstor Electronic archive of core journals in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Includes complete runs of journals with full-text of all articles published prior to the most current five years.

    • Project Muse Full text of recent issues of over 240 journals from 40 scholarly publishers. Covers the fields of literary studies, history, the visual & performing arts, cultural studies, education, political science, gender studies, economics, and many other arts and humanities and social science disciplines.

    • New York Public Library Dance Catalog
      Lists the holdings of the New York Public Library Dance Collection. The collection consists of books, periodical articles, video recordings, and other media. All forms of dance, from all cultures, in many languages are included. THERE IS NO LINK FROM THE NYPLDC. When you locate an item, check the catalog or the Full Text Finder
      Strategies:
      Looking for materials on a subject, start with a WORDS search then follow the SUBJECT
      dance and russia and history / dance and russia and 20th
      renaissance and danc*

      Looking for materials on a person, start with a subject search: tharp, twyla
      In addition, limit the search by using the word search and adding names of works or other words:
      twyla tharp and as time goes by
      twyla tharp and (technique or style or choreography or influence) in WORD
      LIMIT BY: LANGUAGE; FORMAT=PRINTED MATERIALS/MICROFORMS; DATE and SORT BY DATE

      There are many other databases to use depending on the topic:
      Education = ERIC; Education Research Complete
      Music = RILM; Music Index; Audio databases
      Check databases by subject.
