Identifying Editions of a Literary Text

The following reference sources include biographies of major authors. Examine the bibliographies, references, or further readings sections to help you identify important and/or critical editions of the authors' works.

    Literature Resource Center

    Britannica

The following sources are more thorough in their attempts to identify ALL of the significant and critical editions of an author's work,

Watson, George, ed. New Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. 5 vols. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1969-1977.
    McKeldin Reference Stacks Z2011.N45
Selective, but very extensive, bibliography of primary and secondary material on British authors published before the early 1970s. Includes authors who were established by 1950. Entries for major authors include bibliographies, editions, criticism, and locations of manuscripts.

Includes entries for hundreds of new authors previously omitted from the earlier edition. While it does include information about secondary sources the focus of this edition is on primary material, with details on locations of authors' manuscripts and chronological lists of authors' individual works, including all significant English language editions.

Howard-Hill, T.H. Index to British Literary Bibliography. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1969 - .

    Single Author Bibliographies
One of the most efficient means of identifying the significant editions of an author's works (primary sources) and the important writings about an author (secondary sources) is through published bibliographies of the author. Search for bibliographies on your author in the Catalog. Choose the subject beginning with option and type in author's name (last name, first name). EXAMPLE: morrison, toni. Browse the list of subject headings and choose the headings with the subdivision bibliography.

Look for book reviews of your chosen edition in the Anual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL Plus) and see what the critics have to say about the edition. If the edition has not been reviewed then it may not be considered significant.

Articles

Use the following databases to locate journal articles. Be sure to follow the link. This will direct you to one of three sources: 1. the full text of the article, online, 2. the catalog entry for the print version of the journal, or 3. Interlibrary Loan where you can order the article if the online and print versions are not available from the UM Libraries.

If the database does not have the link you will need to check both the Catalog and E-Journals in Research Port to determine if the journal is available through the Libraries. Check the Journals subset of the Catalog and search under the title of the journal, to see if a paper or microform version of the journal is available. Check the E-Journals link in Research Port to determine if an electronic version of the journal is available. If the UM Libraries do not own the journal you can request it through Interlibrary Loan
