UM Library Databases

    American Periodicals Series
    Full text images of over 1,100 colonial and early American magazines and periodicals spanning from colonial times to the mid 20th century. Titles range from America's first scientific journal, Medical Repository, to popular magazines like Vanity Fair and Ladies' Home Journal.

    19th Century Masterfile
    Covers periodicals, books, newspapers, and more from the 19th century to 1925.

    Nineteenth Century
    Online catalogue of over 25,000 nineteenth-century works available on microfiche. McKeldin owns microfiche in the General Collection and the Women Writers Specialist Collection.

    Periodicals Index Online
    Access to 4,500 arts/humanities & social science journals published since the 19th-century in 40 languages, on 37 key subjects, e.g., architecture, archaeology, area studies, business, law, & linguistics, containing a full-text archive to over 300 periodical titles and direct linking to JSTOR.

    "A Digital Library of 18th and 19th Century Journals." Includes the titles Annual Register (1758-1778), Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine (1843-1863), Gentleman's Magazine (1731-1750), Notes and Queries (1849-1869), Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society (1757-1777), and The Builder (1843-1852).

    The Nineteenth Century in Print: The Making of America in Books and Periodicals (http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/ndlpcoop/moahtml/ncphome.html)
    "This collection comprises 1,500 books and 23 popular periodical titles published in the United States during the nineteenth century, primarily during the second half of the century. The materials selected illuminate the subject areas of education, psychology, American history, sociology, religion, and science and technology. Also included are volumes of American poetry."

    "A searchable electronic index to the science content of sixteen nineteenth-century general periodicals. Contains entries for over 14,000 articles and references to more than 6000 individuals and 2500 publications."

    Undergraduate Victorian Studies Online Teaching Anthology (http://etrc.lib.umn.edu/uvsota/index.htm)
    A project from the University of Minnesota Libraries. Includes a digital collection of Victorian periodical articles grouped into three thematic areas: Condition of Women, Empire, and Science, Evolution and Eugenics.

    Searching the Catalog: Use the Advanced Search feature in the Libraries Catalog to identify materials in the UM Libraries' collections. Use the "Year/s" limit, as shown below, to restrict your search to the Victorian period.

    You can perform similar searches using WorldCat and the Center for Research Libraries (CRL) Catalog. Items from CRL and WorldCat can be requested via Interlibrary Loan.

      Includes extensive descriptions of British literary magazines published from 1698 through 1984. See Volume 3: The Victorian and Edwardian Age, 1837-1913. Many of these titles are available in the microfilm collections described below. Search the Catalog by periodical title to find the call number and microfilm reel number.
