Global Communities

Web page created by Gerri Foudy and Travis Johnson, Social Sciences Team, UM Libraries
Director of Global Communities: Kirsten la Cour Dabelko

The University of Maryland Libraries have many resources that will help with research for your Global Communities colloquia. If you need additional information, please contact Gerri Foudy or Travis Johnson, or any one of the affiliated librarians listed below, or speak with a Reference Librarian at McKeldin Library's Service Plus Information Desk.

Because of licensing agreements, access to bibliographic databases and electronic journals is restricted to UM faculty, staff, and students. These may be accessed from off campus; consult Remote access for further information. For a complete list of electronic resources available to University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students, as well as information about the full range of library materials and services, consult the UM Libraries' home page.

Table of Contents

Finding Books in the Libraries

Search the online catalog for books and documents on your topic. Start with a keyword search.
Example: crosscultural communication AND media
You must also use the catalog to find out whether the Libraries subscribe to a particular journal. Do a "title beginning with" search for the journal title (not the article title).
Example: Journal of Communication

See Catalog Guide for more information on how to use the catalog and Finding Library Items Using Call Numbers for information on how to find books on the shelves.

Finding Journal Articles

When off-campus, access databases through ResearchPort or by dialing into the campus network [Further Information].

To find journal articles on your topic, you should first search in an online database - the database will be able to tell you exactly which journal (and in which journal issue and page number) you can find the article.
