This Web page contains links to electronic and print resources to assist students with the research process for assignments in the Fall 2007, HESP 300: Introduction to Psycholinguistics course. Because of licensing agreements, access to most bibliographic databases and electronic journals is restricted to UM faculty, staff, and students. These may be accessed from off campus, consult Off-Campus Access to Library Resources for further information.

Searching the Catalog

• Find books on a topic by selecting word/s anywhere from the drop-down box. Type in terms that describe your topic, e.g., children AND (communication OR speech).

• Find a journal title by clicking on the word JOURNALS at the top of the screen. Select title beginning with... from the drop-down box. Type the full name of the journal title, e.g., Child Development, in the search box.

Searching Databases for Journal Articles on a Topic

• Academic Search Premier (EBSCOhost) UM Only
  Provides abstracts and indexing for over 7,000 journals. Full text of articles for over 4,000 scholarly publications, including more than 3,100 peer-reviewed publications. Covers many disciplines.

• CINAHL [Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature] (EBSCOhost)
  (1982- ) UM Only
  Covers over 1600 professional journals in nursing and allied health. Provides access to journals, healthcare books and book chapters, dissertations, conference proceedings, and standards of practice. Also, search Pre-CINAHL, a companion database to CINAHL is intended to provide current awareness of new journal articles.

• Education Research Complete (EBSCOhost) (1983- ) UM Only
  Provides citations and the world’s largest and most complete collection of full text education journals relevant to all areas of education. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education; all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing; and areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues.

• ERIC [Educational Resources Information Center] (EBSCOhost) (1966- )
  Comprehensive coverage of educational literature. Citations and abstracts for journals articles issued in the monthly Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE) and reports in education issued in the monthly Resources in Education (RIE). Find full-text of ED numbered documents (1966- ) through the Full Text from ERIC link after the citation or on microfiche in McKeldin Current Periodicals Room.
  Use the Thesaurus of ERIC Descriptors available through the green Thesaurus button at the top of the search screen or in print at McKeldin Reference.

• Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (EBSCOhost)
  Citations and abstracts for over 550 journals. Full-text for nearly 520 scholarly journals. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong.

• MEDLINE (PubMed) OR (EBSCOhost) UM Only (1966- )
  Comprehensive database for biomedicine. Citations, abstracts, and link-out to some full-text at publisher's Web sites. More than 5,000 medical journals and basic science journals related to medicine, including PreMEDLINE. Broad scope. Updated weekly.

• PsycInfo (EBSCOhost) (1887- ) UM Only
  Citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, and technical reports, and citations to dissertations. Comprehensive coverage of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines, such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law. International coverage.
  Use the Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms online or in print at McKeldin reference.

• Social Science and Science Citation Index (ISI) (1945- ) UM only
  A unique index for finding papers that have cited other papers. Citations, abstracts, and bibliographies of journal articles in over 5,000 major science journals. Strong in life sciences and medicine.

Obtaining Journal Articles

From the results page in a database following a search:
• Where available, click on the full-text link within a database to get an electronic (full-text) copy of the article online. The article will be in HTML and/or PDF format. You may be given the option to print, e-mail, or save the article to a disk.

• If no full-text link is available, click on the Find It button for the citation of interest. Find It integrates full-text articles embedded within databases, full-text articles from e-journals, a link into the Catalog for a paper copy of the article, and the Interlibrary Loan service when no copy of the article is available on this campus. Your options will be apparent from the available links within Find It.

  If searching for a journal article when not within a database:

• Search Research Port to find articles embedded within databases or in e-journal collections to which we subscribe. After logging into Research Port, click on the E-journals tab at the top of the screen. Type the name of the journal in the search box or use the alphsbetical option. Click on the Go button. If we have an electronic copy of the journal, you will see it listed. Click on Find It to get to the copy of the article online.

• Search the Catalog primarily to find a paper copy of the journal. Click on JOURNALS near the top of the page. The drop down box will default to title beginning with.... Type the complete title (no abbreviations) of the journal (e.g., American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology) in the search box. You will be able to determine if our campus or another campus in the University System of Maryland subscribes to the journal.

• If our campus does not own a paper copy of the journal and does not have electronic access, request a FREE copy of the article through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) via the online request form. NOTE: ILL delivery averages 3-6 days but may take up to two weeks via e-mail (desktop delivery).
