Finding Government Literature

  • MedlinePlus (NLM Web Site)
    Preformulated searches of authoritative information from the National Library of Medicine (NLM), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), other government, non-profit, and other health-related organizations. See health topics. Check under the heading of organizations.
    NOTE: Particularly useful for topics of child health, mental health, substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, senior health.

  • Regional Depository for Federal Government Documents
    McKeldin Library, 4th floor, is the regional depository library for federal government documents. You can search for materials on a topic in the Catalog. Note that the location code for materials will say GOVDOC and LC DOC, SU DOC, MFICHE, or MFILM. Many of the materials may be checked out. Otherwise, they can be photocopied or printed out. Ask staff at the desk on the 4th floor of McKeldin Library for assistance.

    To search the Catalog specifically for Government Documents on your topic, use the Advanced Search screen. Type in your topic and, under Location, select Government Documents (all) from the drop down box.

Searching Databases for Journal Articles on a Topic

  • Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition (EBSCOhost)
    Citations and abstracts for over 550 journals. Full-text for nearly 520 scholarly journals. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong.

  • MEDLINE PubMed (NLM Website) or EBSCOhost (1966- ) UM Only
    Comprehensive database for biomedicine. Citations, abstracts, and link-out to some full-text at publisher's Web sites. More than 5,000 medical journals and basic science journals related to medicine. Broad scope. Updated weekly.[Further information]

  • SocIndex with Full Text (EBSCOhost) (1895- ) UM Only
    Citations and abstracts for more than 1,300,000 records. Abstracts are provided for more than 620 core journals dating back to 1895. Contains full-text for 242 core journals, 72 priority journals, 547 books and monographs, and 6,711 conference papers.
