SUBJECT ENCYCLOPEDIAS FOR WITCHCRAFT, MAGIC, GHOSTS, AND OCCULTISM
Subject encyclopedias are excellent places to begin research on your topic. Subject encyclopedias provide an introduction and background to the topic as well as a list of references to further your research. The following are examples of subject encyclopedias. To locate additional subject encyclopedias search the The Catalog by using the word/s anywhere search and your topic words and add: encyclopedias or dictionaries or handbooks. Using truncation to retrieve all spellings, your search would look something like this: witchcraft and (encyclopedia* or dictionar* or handbook*) The * = truncation = encyclopedia or encylopedic or encyclopedias...

SEARCHING THE CATALOG

Using the Library of Congress subject headings identified from the above sources, look for additional books by conducting a subject beginning with.... search.
Examples:

    ghosts
    parapsychology ; occult sciences
    magic ; magic tricks
    witchcraft; witches

Strategies for searching for a phrase:

  • Use quotations: "harry potter"

Search to see if we own the materials referenced in the above reference books and other sources you use. Examples of citations:

  • Seligmann, Kurt. The History of Magic and the Occult NY: Gramercy Books, 1997. (BOOK) - Search the catalog under the title or author.

  • Brunvand, Jan Harold. "Urban Legends." In Traditional Storytelling Today: An International Sourcebook., edited by Margaret Read MacDonald. Chicago: Fitzroy Dearborn, 1999. pp.572-576
(CHAPTER IN A BOOK) - Search the catalog under the name of the book (Traditional Storytelling) or the editor (Margaret MacDonald) - NOT the author of the chapter (Brunvand) or the title of the chapter (Urban Legends)

  • Curry, Patrick. "The Astrologers' Feasts," History Today April 1988, 38, 17-22.
    (JOURNAL ARTICLE)
To locate journal articles from sources other than the databases

The most efficient way to locate the journal/magazine article (when you have the citation from another source - not when you are using a database) is to click on Research Port and use the following search box:
looking for a specific article lookup

    • Use the catalog and the yellow Request link when the UMCP copy is checked out or UMCP does not own a copy and another library within the USMAI does.

    • Request books not held by the University System of Maryland Libraries and journal articles not available on campus through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Submit your request via the Forms for Requesting Materials
