Finding Books

    Catalog
    Resources available in the University System of Maryland Libraries. Include the phrase "japanese language" in your search to find books about Japanese. To find books in Japanese use the Advanced Search option.

    WorldCat
    This huge catalog will lead you to resources available in major libraries around the world. Books not owned by UM can be requested via Interlibrary Loan.

    National Diet Library of Japan: Search the Diet Library catalogs.

    Other Helpful Hints:

      Try combinations of the following subject terms:
      More specific: Conversation Analysis, Dialogue Analysis, Discourse Analysis, Etiquette, Forms of Address, Honorific.
      Less specific: Intercultural Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Language and Culture, Politeness (Linguistics), Japanese Language -- Social Aspects, Speech Acts (Linguistics).

      You may also find useful items by browsing books in the "Pragmatics and Beyond" series (published by John Benjamins). Use the "Advanced Search" feature in the Catalog to search by series title.

      To search for Japanese publications in the UM Catalog use Romaji. The characters will display on any computer in the Library. For help with searching, see "Understanding the Modified Hepburn System" on the Japanese Collection Web page.

      To search WorldCat in CJK characters, use the terminal near the reference desk in the East Asia Reading Room. These computers are only available when East Asia staff is on duty, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.

    Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts (LLBA)
    Covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. Complete coverage is also given to various fields of linguistics including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics.

      MLA International Bibliography
      Indexes journals, books, essay collections, proceedings, dissertations, and bibliographies published worldwide in the areas of literary criticism, language, linguistics, rhetoric, and folklore of all countries.

      SocIndex with FullText
      Features more than 1.3 million records with subject headings from a sociology-specific thesaurus. Contains full text for 242 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 72 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for 500+ books and monographs, and full text for more than 6,500 conference papers.

      Bibliography of Asian Studies
      References Western-language books, journal articles, and conference proceedings, including citations to all articles from the 100 most-used journals in Asian Studies.

      Magazine Plus (In Japanese)
      Most comprehensive online index to Japanese articles, includes "Zasshi Kiji Sakuin (1948- )," annual reports of academic institutions and research associations, festschriften, collections of scholarly papers, general magazines, business magazines, popular magazines, etc. from over 20,000 journals. Updated weekly.

      Digital Dissertations
      This database is the an authoritative source for information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses. The database represents the work of authors from over 1,000 graduate schools and universities. Full text is available from 1997 to the present.

    Individual Journals: You can also try browsing particular journal titles of interest, such as the ones listed below. (Links will open the menu, which will link you to both print holdings and (where available) electronic versions for these journals.)
