The University of Maryland Libraries (www.lib.umd.edu) are rich in print, online and non-print resources. This large collection, of over 3 million books and 32,000 journal titles, is housed in 8 libraries: Art Library

Houses collections in art, art history, history, archaeology,
studio arts, including photography and graphic design.

Houses collections in chemistry, biochemistry, cell biology, enzymology, immunology, microbiology, & molecular genetics.
Houses collections for biomedical engineering, physics, mathematics, civil, chemical & environmental engineering, physical sciences, electrical & computer engineering.

All campus libraries are on reduced hours during the summer. Carefully review them so that you do not inadvertently schedule activities for your students (i.e., in the evening or on weekends) when the libraries are closed.

When using any campus library, NSLC Team Advisors will need to identify themselves with the library's Information and Reference desk staff each time you accompany a group of students to use computers. Thank you!
Public computers in the campus libraries cannot be reserved and are made available for all users. Visitors must obtain guest accounts to use public computers. McKeldin Library is a popular location. Staff need your help to balance the needs of visitors with our mission to serve UM college students. In order to avoid undue congestion and minimize stress for patrons, NSLC will need to appoint 1 person from a group of students to use a library computer.
Library computers do not have filters to screen out controversial materials.
Library computers are installed with complete Microsoft Office capabilities (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and allow for Web email access.
Advise your students to bring a thumb drive/memory stick/flash drive with them since they cannot store their work on library computers. McKeldin Library computers do not support floppy discs.
All users need to abide by the University's Policy on the Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources.
New this year! All visitors must obtain guest accounts to use library computers and access online library resources. Apply at any campus library Circulation Desk; photo I.D. is required. Guest accounts are good for 30 days, after which you will need to create a new one.
Sorry, this won't be possible. Students are free to use their laptops in the libraries, keeping in mind that wireless access to the campus's network (i.e., Internet) is limited to only currently registered UM students, faculty and staff. The alternative is to use a public computer in any of the campus libraries to search the Web and access e-mail.
Wireless Guest Access:
Library staff are not obliged to sponsor Guest Wireless Accounts. If you have a University sponsor (i.e., faculty member), they may agree to provide you with guest access; see http://www.oit.umd.edu/nts/noc/wireless/guestaccess.html or contact the Office of Information Technology at 301-405-1500.
Since library photocopiers and printers do not take dollar bills or coins, NSLC students will need to purchase a Visitor's Card (also called a Photocopy or Copy Card) to print and copy in the library. These cards look like this:
Visitor's Cards may be purchased in any campus library using a Copy Card ATM Machine (typically found on the main floor). These machines look like this:
It costs $1.00 to buy a Visitor's Card and when received comes with a balance of only 20 cents; this is enough to print/photocopy 2 pages at 10 cents per page. Advise students to add additional money to their card in order to print/photocopy additional pages.
Copy Card ATM machines accept $5, $10 and $20 bills. There is a Bill-to-Bill Changer machine in McKeldin Library stationed next to the Copy Card ATM Machines.
All campus libraries offer many quiet individual study areas for students. In McKeldin Library, Group Study Rooms (that accommodate about 8-10 people) are available on the 2nd floor.
SECURITY, THEFT, LOST & FOUND:
Security of personal items:
Campus spaces (including libraries) are public spaces. The theft of personal items is a problem on campus and throughout the libraries. Underscore with your students that they are responsible for keeping their personal items with them at all times. Advise them to bring as little as possible with them to safeguard losing items or having them stolen. If items are stolen, please notify library staff who will call campus police on your behalf.Theft of library materials:
Give students an adequate amount of time to research. Overly stressed students can sometimes resort to mutilating library materials or stealing them so that they can complete their assignments. If students are caught ruining materials or improperly removing them from the library, they will be detained and campus police will be called.Lost & Found:
At all campus libraries, Lost & Found is located at the Circulation and/or Information/Reference Desk. The University Police house the campus's Lost & Found.

Behavior of Your Students:
Campus libraries are places for work and study. We assume that your students possess the appropriate levels of maturity to be productive in a scholarly environment. Please help us by discussing the Code of Conduct for Library Users with your students in advance of their visit.Computer Use Policy:
Library computers are available to users on a first-come, first-served basis. Users conducting research are given first priority, so personal e-mail and other non-academic online activities must be kept to a minimum. Users are expected to abide by the University's Policy on Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources.
If there is a fire drill or should another another emergency occur that requires patrons to evacuate the building, please follow the directives given by campus police and library staff.
