Climate Changes in the Information Profession
Many today are questioning the relevance and value of libraries in the Google and Wikipedia Age. The communities we serve are increasingly diverse, with competing and contradictory expectations for information services. Increasing demands on everyone in the academy--faculty, students, and staff--are changing work habits and forcing redefinition of roles and priorities. From multiple perspectives based on her own experiences (faculty researcher and teacher, academic librarian, national information policy maker, and professional society president), Dr. Hahn will discuss the challenges and opportunities for librarians today and in the coming years and offer strategies for strengthening our profession and gaining recognition for our contributions to our institutions and the people we serve.

Rethinking Resource Sharing
The Rethinking Resource Sharing Initiative (RRS) advocates for a revolution in the way that libraries conduct resource sharing. This global effort seeks to help librarians move from a library-centric model to a user-centric approach that includes the possibility of sending material directly to patrons or offering people commercial alternatives to getting information. During this program, we will discuss the RRS initiative, its Manifesto for Rethinking Resource Sharing /
Un Manifiesto para Reconsiderar el Uso Compartido de Recursos as well as some exciting new programs and solutions for library resource sharing.

Building Liaison Relationships: Some Practical Ideas
Building strong relationships between libraries and librarians on one hand and departments on campus and teaching faculty on the other, has been one of the most challenging priorities to many academic libraries in the United States. The great expectation in all these cases is to build a strong mutual partnership between the librarians and teaching faculty in order to advance the educational experience of students and research capabilities for faculty. However too often these goals do not develop properly and reach their desired potential. How does one start in building liaison relationships with faculty in perspective departments? What kind of educational and professional background can help a liaison librarian in such a position? How does one develop further skills? And what kind of possible results can one expect to achieve from such partnerships? These issues will be examined in relationship to collection development, instruction, and reference, based on the presenter's experience at the University of Maryland.

Associate Director, Interactive Center for Information Resources and Learning (CIRIA), University of the Americas, Puebla, Mexico
This presentation will describe the experiences of an interdicsiplianry team of faculty librarians at the Interactive Center for Information Resources and Learning (CIRIA), during six years of work at this institution. The University of the Americas, in Puebla, created the position of faculty librarian, in the Fall of 2002. The faculty librarian, in this new collaborative framework, serves as a liaison between librarians and faculty, by designing and delivering both formal and informal academic programs oriented towards facilitating the promotion of information literacy and knowledge management. The faculty librarian also participates in diverse research and institutional programs and events that reflect the interests of the student body. |

This session will discuss the development of this program, which consists of an ongoing series of library instruction sessions, orientations for new graduate students, the preparation of individualized web course pages, and one-on-one in-depth research consultation services for students and faculty. Campus Colleagues: Librarian/Faculty Collaboration Benefits
Research assignments are frustrating to students, librarians and faculty. Students find it frustrating because they are not sure what topic to select and how to go about collecting the often specified number and type of sources. Librarians are frustrated because the students just want to find the sources, without learning or thinking about research strategy. Faculty are frustrated with the results. In this session presenters will discuss strategies and benefits of collaborating on research assignments.

Library Bibliographic Profiles: Collection Development in Close Cooperation with the Academy
Integral and effective collection development must be focused not only toward the harmonic growth of collections in the Library, but also toward building products that can facilitate the correct use of the Catalog for information discover. A truly useful Catalog should also supply the kind of records that can be a powerful tool for referential feedback for the information suppliers. A collection development tool must also serve as a useful guide to topic sources for improving information literacy. This strategic plan requires the strongest collaboration between the Academy and Librarian-Bibliographers.
