TESOL: Research Resources

Scope: This page contains links to electronic resources useful for researching information about second language acquisition. For a complete list of electronic resources available to University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students, as well as information about the full range of library materials and services, consult the UM Libraries' home page.

Because of licensing agreements, access to bibliographic databases and electronic journals is restricted to UM faculty, staff, and students. These may be accessed from off campus via Research Port; for more detailed information consult Remote access.

Encyclopedias, Handbooks and Research Reviews

The following print resources provide good basic information, definitions, overviews of research, and bibliographies for further reading. They are excellent places to begin your research as they provide background information and summaries of major research that has already been conducted.

The Libraries' online catalog
The online catalog provides information on the holdings of all libraries in the University System of Maryland and affiliated institutions. Books owned by other libraries in the system can be ordered at the computer for delivery to College Park(or elsewhere); click on "Request." Try subject browse searches on the following Library of Congress subject headings: "English language study and teaching foreign speakers", "second language acquisition","applied linguistics". You may request material not owned in the University of Maryland System through Interlibrary Loan.

Online Databases/Print Indexes

Academic Universe (Lexis-Nexis)
Choose the "News" category to access full-text newspaper articles.

Digital Dissertations
Information on U.S. and some non-U.S. dissertations. Since 1997 the full text of Univ. of Md. dissertations and 24-page previews of dissertations from other institutions are included.

ERIC
Information about journal articles and non-journal materials on all aspects of education. For journal articles, check the title of the journal in the online catalog to see if the Libraries own it. ERIC Documents are available in the ERIC microform collection in the McKeldin Periodicals-Microforms Room and, from 1993 to the present, online. Efforts are being made to put older documents online.

Use this print source to search for older information. Sources covered include English-language periodicals, yearbooks, and some monographs.

Education Research Complete

This is a bibliographic and full text database covering scholarly research and information relating to all areas of education. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. The database also covers areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues.

This international abstracting journal provides summaries of research findings in language education. It also provides brief notations of important new books and each issues contains a state-of-the-art survey article.

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts
This database covers all aspects of the study of language.

Multicultural Education Abstracts. MCKREF STACKS LC1099.M8
International in scope, this title abstracts journals and books of interest to those concerned with multicultural education.

PsycInfo
This is the primary indexing and abstracting service in the field of psychology. It indexes journal articles, books and book chapters, and dissertations.

WorldCat
Combined catalog of books and other materials in libraries worldwide. Books not owned by University System of Maryland libraries can be ordered at the computer for borrowing through interlibrary loan; click on "ILL."

The following is only a sample of the many Web sites that provide resources for teachers of English as a second language and English language learners.

Center for Adult English Language Acquisition (CAELA)
As the name implies,this site focuses on teaching English to adults.

Center for Applied Linguistics
Provides links to other web sites concerning adult esl, bilingual education, heritage languages, immigrant education, preK-12, SIOP/sheltered instruction, tacher education and two-way immersion.

Dave's ESL Cafe
This site is particularly strong in providing access to various discussion forums for teachers. It also provides resources for students and job information.

ESL Flow
A useful resource for teachers developing lesson plans.

ESL Lessons, Games, Ideas and Links
As the name implies, this is a good site to find ideas to incorporate in your classroom and to contribute ideas and lesson plans that have worked for you.

ESLgold.com
Links to over a thousand pages offering free student and teacher resources.

English as a Second Language Home Page
Provides a starting point for those who want to study English through the Web.

EnglishClub.com and TEFL.net
These are two related British sites. EnglishClub.com provides resources for both teachers and students, while TEFL.net is designed exclusively for teachers.

Englishpage.com
This page provides resources for more advanced ESL students.

ESL Monkeys
Provides information for teachers (including job listings and a place to post resumes, lesson plans and ideas, and country information), for schools and for students.

The Internet TESL Journal
This is a monthly online journal that offers articles, research papers, lesson plans, classroom handouts and reference to Web sites. Its archives go back to 1995.

Karin's ESL Partyland
A good place to find lesson plans and reproducible materials to use in class. There are also discussion forums, a chat room and job board for teachers. The student pages include interactive quizzes and lessons, discussion forums, a chat room and many additional links.

Lesson Plans and Resources for ESL, Bilingual, and Foreign Language Teachers
In addition to lesson plans, this site includes links to professional associations, employment opportunities, and educational standards and frameworks.

National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (NCELA)
Formerly the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education, NCELA "collects, analyzes and disseminates information relating to the effective education of linguistically and culturally diverse learners in the U.S." In addition to its web site it produces a weekly electronic new bulletin, "Newsline", and a monthly electronic magazine, "Outlook."

OWL: English as a Second Language (ESL) Resources, Handouts and Exercises
Provides reources, handouts and exercises and links to additional grammar sites.

Tesol.net
Includes sections for: penpals/epals, links, TOEFL, videos, job links, recruiters, professional organizations, mailing lists, K-12, materials, activities, articles and research, training, projects by students, software, fun sites.

TESOL: Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages
This website offers career resources for individuals and information concerning the advancement of the profession in general.
