Description

A photographic record of the Alinari brothers’ systematic reproduction of all the major Italian works of art from private and public collections. The Archive includes five collections: Alinari, Brogi, Anderson, Manelli and Fiorentini. There is a total of 150,000 cataloged plates and approximately 70,000 in the process of being cataloged.

The Archive is organized according to a uniform cataloging system for all the collections. These are classified according to a topographic system which identifies the Italian region, city, museum, title and name of the artist in alphabetical order.

One of the last and very important sections of the collections that which included landscapes and many Italian cities photographed in the second half of the 19th century.

The following source provides more detailed information about the contents of each microfilm reel in the collection:

The microfiche are accompanied by a series of catalogs and several indices of artists and subjects. These printed indices include:

  1. Alphabetical listing of the names of the Italian cities, villages, etc., with references to the provinces in which they are situated;
  2. Table of contents accompanying each section;
  3. Correlation list relating the photograph number with both the place in the microfiche collection and the page in the detailed catalogs;
  4. Tables of Contents of those finding-aids in microfiche form.

Indices in microfiche form include:

  1. Detailed catalogs of the Alinari, Brogi and Anderson Collections;
  2. Subject indices (for the Alanari Collection only);
  3. Name Index (for the Alanari Collection only).
