Microform Collections
Separate printed indexes of artists and sculptors are provided in the Indexes binder in the
Microforms Room. A unique subiect index, Index Thematique , is an iconographic
reference to the Photographic Archives. It covers names of persons, places, buildings, historical
and mythological events, listing artists and brief descriptive details of each item. The
Index Thematique is on fiche 1-43 in the Manuscripts section. The
Inventaire des Musees lists the several hundred galleries and museums,
including foreign collections (excluding the National Museums), whose worlc is included on the
microfiche. Against each institution is a list of the works represented. The Inventaire
des Musees is on the Index fiche 44-59. Both of these indexes, the
Index Thematique and the Inventaire des
Musees, are handwritten and, unfortunately, are barely legible and of little use.
The Photographic Archives of the Caisse Nationale des Monuments Historiques et des Sites,
Paris, were established by the French Ministry of Culture as a comprehensive reference collection
of historic and documentary photographs of art and monuments in France. The aim of this major
part of the Archive has been to record the principal works of art in French collections, public and
private, and also works from foreign sources exhibited in France. There are over 70,000 items
from hundreds of museums and galleries.
The collection has been grouped into eight main sections, with the fiche in separate numerical
sequences, as follows: Paintings in the Louvre & National Museums, & Modern Art Nl-154;
Paintings in Provincial & Other Museums - Rl-136; Drawings in the Louvre & National Museums
- Ll-128; Drawings in Provincial Museums & Engravings - El-126; Sculpture, Ivories, Bronzes,
Stained Glass - Sl-100; Antiquities - Al-98; Decorative Art - Tl-153; Manuscripts Ml-60; Subject
& Museum Indexes (in Manuscripts section) 1-59.
The Photographic Archives, first commissioned by the State in 1851, comprises one of the largest
and most important collections of its kind in France, and includes photographs of many
monuments and works of art destroyed or lost in the two world wars. Copies of photographs may
be ordered from the Caisse Nationale des Monuments Historiques et des Sites.
