Hakluyt Society. Works.
DescriptionThe Hakluyt Society, formed in 1846, numbered among its founders the Director of the British Museum and the President of the Royal Geographical Society. Its purposes were to publish original narratives of important voyages, travels, expeditions and other geographical records and to disseminate information about these events.
Works are filed by author or title in the microcard file in the Periodicals/Microforms Room. The card catalog must be consulted under Hakluyt Society to establish the main entries and to determine the library's holdings, both in microform and hard copy.
The Society is named after Richard Hakluyt, a publicist, historian and geographer. Original works in foreign languages have been translated into English. These books are of potential interest to students of history, geography, navigation and ethnology.
