Description

The collection consists of microfiche reproductions of over 15,000 artistrs renderings of American domestic art objects from settlement to 1900.

The microfiche edition of the Index of American Design is arranged in ten parts:

  1. Textiles, Costume
  2. Art and Design of Utopian and Religious Communities
  3. Architecture and Naive Art
  4. Tools, Hardware, Firearms and Vehicles
  5. Domestic Utensils
  6. Furniture and Decorative Accessories
  7. Wood Carving and Weathervanes
  8. Ceramics and Glass
  9. Silver, Copper, Pewter and Toleware
  10. Toys and Musical Instruments

The paintings were comissioned under the Federal Arts Project, W. P. A., and are now stored in the National Gallery of Art. Each of the ten parts of the Index of American Design is accompanied by a printed catalog contained on a single fiche. The Consolidated Catalog is in printed copy.
