Description

The Index Photographie de l'Art en France is a microfiche collection of reproductions of 100,000 photographs of French art and architecture. The collection contains photos of churches, monuments, public buildings and major edifices. Also included are paintings, sculptures, archeological finds and some handicrafts. Sacred medieval architecture and sculpture are particularly well represented.

The microfiche are organized geographically.

At the top of each fiche is an eye-readable header indicating the geographic location and works of art covered by the fiche. Under each photo is a numbered caption which describes the contents of the photograph and gives its date.

The photographs comprise the largest such archive of French art outside of France and are housed at the Forschungsinstitut fur Kunstgeschichte (Research Institute for Art History) of the Philipps-UniversitatMarburg and the Rheinisches Bildarchiv Koln.
