Description

This Washington Irving Papers is a collection of several previously separate collections acquired by the Manuscripts and Archives Section of the New York Public Library. Included are Irving's literary manuscripts, notebooks, diaries and correspondence, and other materials.

The collection is arranged as follows:
Series I: Literary Manuscripts - (located on reel 1 and part of reel 2) includes holograph drafts, manuscripts, revisions and notes for many of Irving's literary and historical works.
Series II: Notebooks - (located on part of reel 2) contains personal and literary notes made between 1807 and 1844. Many however are undated.
Series III: Journals - (located on reel 3) contains Irving's diaries kept between 1804 and 1842, which include descriptions of his travels in the United States and abroad.
Series IV: Letters - (located on reel 4) consists of Irving's letters to and from family, friends, and colleagues, as well as correspondence and other documents signed in his capacity as charge d'affaires of the American legation in London and president of the Astor Library
Series V: Genealogy and Series VI: Memorial - (both located on reel 4)
