Marburger Index: Photographic Documentation of Art in Germany.
5,000 fiche.

Description

This collection of 500,000 photographs represents the holdings of the Bildarchiv Foto Marburg at the University of Marburg Research Institute for the History of Art and the Rheinisches Bildarchiv, Cologne. The photographs were produced between 1850 and 1976 and comprise works of all genres of the fine arts from pre- and early history to the present day. Architecture, painting, sculpture and arts and crafts from the Middle Ages to modern times are especially well documented.

Entries are arranged topographically, in alphabetical order of place name, subdivided where necessary, i.e., fiche no. 1 begins with Aachen, so that fiche no. 8 is Aachen: Treasures of the Cathedral: Shrines and Reliquaries.

The Marburger Index consists primarily of German, particularly Rhenish, works of art. Forty percent of the items from the University of Marburg Research Institute cover art in Germany. The Rhenish Picture Archive affiliated with the city of Cologne, and it is principally concerned with the documentation of the art of the Rhine area. Although both contributing institutions continue to add photographs to their collections, no acquisitions after 1976 are included in the Marburger Index.
