Automated Access:
- NETWORK WWW
- The NCJRS database on the Web contains citations from journal literature, books, government reports, congressional hearings, audiovisuals, and more. The database currently contains over 140,000 document citations, including the latest findings from each state in
the U.S. and good coverage of international documents. The Web database gives quick access to documents acquired and listed by the NCJRS Clearinghouse in Rockville.
There are four ways to search (1) Global Search: keywords anywhere in record, (2) Author, (3) Subject: the thesaurus is not online but there is a copy in the ARS area, (4) NCJ number: enter it without any prefix.
Items identified in the NCJRS database can be found several ways. The Periodicals department has a collection of NCJRS microfiche that covers selected documents from 1972 to 1996 (NCJRS stopped distributing microfiche in 1996).
The microfiche is arranged by NCJ number, so take down the number when searching the database. Take the NCJ number, then go directly to the microfiche collection (MCK PER M-FICHE HV6016.U55). For those items not part of the NCJRS collection on micfrofiche, consult VICTOR, Government Documents (McKeldin - 2d Floor) or a reference librarian.
Description
This collection is composed of about 30 percent of the holdings of the U.S.
National Criminal Justice Reference Service in microfiche format between 1972 and 1996. It
includes published and unpublished research reports, program descriptions and
evaluations, books, dissertations, theoretical and empirical studies,
handbooks and standards, journal articles, audio cassettes, films and
filmstrips. The microfiche collection was discontinued by NCJRS in 1996. Many NCJRS publications (those done by government agencies and contractors) are available fulltext on the NCJRS website.
Microfiche are arranged by NCJ number (or accession number).
Index/Guide
The following source provides more detailed information about the contents of each microfilm reel in the collection:
- REF HV6016.U552
- Cumulative Index to the NCJRS Microfiche Collection. Annual.
1985-
Provides title, subject, corporate author, personal author, and citation
numbers indexes to the NCJRS microfiche collection.
- REF HV6016.U551
- DRI: Document Retrieval Index, 1972-1984.
The NCJRS provides access to its entire collection through this
index. It is not just an index to the microfiche collection. Subject,
title, and personal name indexes lead to citations arranged by NCJ number.
If there is an NCJ number, then the full text document can be accessed in
the NCJRS microfiche. Other documents not in
the microfiche collection may be found in the general collections or the
Government Documents Unit.
