Description

The Spanish Plays Collection provides a broad representation of dramatic works, primarily in Spanish, written and performed between 1830 and 1920. It contains over 8000 plays.

The plays are arranged in alphabetical order by author. Sequential numbers identify the items.

The primary authors of these plays are Jose Echegaray, Carlos Arniches y Barrera, Joaquin Dicenta Benedicto, Antonio Garcia Guitierrez, Antonio Gil y Zarate, Manuel Breton de los Herreros and Ricardo de la Vego.

Some Spanish translations of plays by prominent authors from non-Spanish-speaking countries are included.

There are two alphabetical sequences on the microfilm, one including numbers one through 7894 and a supplementary section (numbers 7894 through 8179) for plays discovered after the collection had been processed.

This collection was acquired by the Library of Congress from the Hispanic Society of America in 1938.
