Description

The Records consist of manuscript letterbooks kept by the first three secretaries of the Society and correspondence primarily with missionaries appointed by the S.P.G. to the American colonies. They chronicle the activities of the Society which centered around providing maintenance and support for an orthodox clergy living amongst the colonies.

There are three series in the Records:

I. Letterbook Series A, 17021737, 26 volumes in 8 reels
II. Letter Series B, 1701-1786, 25 volumes in 14 reels
III. Letter Series C, 15 volumes in 5 reels

Letter Series B and C are divided by geographical region and then arranged chronologically. They consist of incoming and outgoing letters; Series A is almost exclusively outgoing correspondence.

Reel twenty-eight of the microfilm is an index to the letters in the three series. It lists correspondents alphabetically and provides appropriate page numbers for each series.
