The Library of the Central Institute for Art History (Zentralinstitut fur Kunstgeschichte) in Munich, West Germany, is recognized as one of the most important art libraries in Europe. Its holdings currently number over 200,000 volumes which cover virtually all aspects of Western art history and theory. The collections are international in scope. Particular strengths of the library are aesthetic theory, history of art, iconography, French art to 1900, and Eastern and Southern European art and art historical literature. Of special importance are the library's collections of emblem books and works on architectural theory which include a comprehensive collection of Vitruvius editions.
